ALL AMERICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE™ TO CONDUCT NATIONAL TRY-OUT AT BIRMINGHAM'S LEGION FIELD
More Than 200 Former College Standouts to Participate in League's 2nd Camp, Including Three Dozen Former Alabama and Auburn Players
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., July 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Three weeks ago the All American Football League created a lot of excitement among 300 prospective players plus the media and football fans who attended the league's inaugural national try- out at the Orlando Citrus Bowl on July 3rd. Following the success of that first national camp, the All American Football League will conduct its second national try-out at Birmingham's famed Legion Field on Thursday, July 26, 2007.
More than 200 players (including over three dozen former Alabama and Auburn players), who have used up their college eligibility, and athletes representing the SEC and other BCS conferences, are scheduled to participate. The try-outs begin at 1:00 P.M. and conclude at 8:00 P.M. Try-outs are open to the public free-of-charge from 4:00 P.M., and fans can watch the action from the field.
The All American Football League is aligning with the passion for college football and the year-round fan interest in the game's traditions and rivalries. The League's charter teams will be located in avid college football markets with teams representing the states of Florida, Alabama, Tennessee and other hotbeds in the Midwest and elsewhere. Play is scheduled to begin spring 2008.
All-American, Crimson Tide legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer John Hannah will be on hand to share his perspective with players and fans. In addition, former Alabama player and legendary college football coach Jackie Sherrill will be in attendance to evaluate the talent on the field. Sherrill is considering a return to the sidelines as a coach of one of the League's teams. League board member and former Florida player and Florida and Tennessee coach Doug Dickey will also attend.
"The Legion Field try-out camp is another important milestone in the League's continuing development," said League Board Chairman and former NCAA President Cedric W. Dempsey. "It's a great opportunity for both the players and fans to show their deep passion for the game. The players who came to Orlando and the people who will showcase their talents in Birmingham have the desire and belief in their ability to compete at a very high level," he said.
"Alabama is a deeply passionate football state and home to one of the most storied rivalries in all of sport," said League CEO Marcus Katz. "We know one team in the state may not be able to represent the loyalties of all of its college football fans. The intense Alabama-Auburn rivalry really goes to the heart of the League's point of differentiation of team passion and loyalty. The Birmingham try-out will identify players for all of the League's charter teams in addition to the Alabama squad," he explained.
Another point of difference is the League's player eligibility requirement. Developed by the League's Board members, who also include former ACC Commissioner and Notre Dame Athletic Director Gene Corrigan, former UCLA Athletic Director Peter Dalis, and former U.S. Naval Academy Athletic Director Jack Lengyel, players must have earned their Bachelor's degree in addition to exhausting their college football eligibility.
Additional try-outs will be conducted next month in Michigan and Texas.
