BIRMINGHAM, Ala., July
27 /PRNewswire/ -- The
All American Football
League announced the
signing of three former
University of Alabama
players to League
contracts. The signings
of Reggie Myles, Marcus
Spencer and Alonzo Ephraim
were
formalized during the
League's national
try-out camp held today
at Birmingham's famed
Legion Field.
"The signing of these
former Alabama players
and our second national
try- out camp, which
attracted more than 200
players who have used up
their college
eligibility, represent
significant milestones
as the All American
Football Leagues
advances towards its
spring 2008 inaugural
season," said League CEO
Marcus Katz.
Myles, Spencer, and Ephraim
are the
first players to be
offered and sign
contracts and will play
for the Alabama team.
Earlier this month, more
than 350 former college
players from BCS
programs, including many
with professional
playing experience,
participated in the
League's inaugural try-
out in Orlando.
Myles was a four-year
letterman at Alabama at
the cornerback position
and ranks fifth all-time
in school history with
nine interceptions for
204 yards. His
professional playing
experience includes
three seasons with the
Cincinnati Bengals.
Ephraim earned three
letters at center for
Alabama. He played 43
games over the course of
four seasons in the NFL
with Philadelphia, Miami
and Cleveland.
Spencer excelled on the
field and in the
classroom. A four-year
letterman at free
safety, he shares the
record for most
interceptions in a SEC
championship game, is
third in interception
return yardage and fifth
in the longest return of
an interception. In his
senior year, Spencer was
a 1st Team Academic
All-America and 1st Team
All SEC Academic
selection.
The All American
Football League is
aligning with the
passion for college
football and the
year-round fan interest
in the game's traditions
and rivalries. The
League's charter teams
will be located in avid
college football markets
with teams representing
the states of Florida,
Alabama, Tennessee and
other hotbeds in the
Midwest and elsewhere.
"These players and
others who we'll be
signing in the near
future personify the
kind of individuals who
have the desire and
belief in their ability
to compete at a very
high level. They
understand and share our
vision of the All
American Football League
as an opportunity to
fuel their passion and
fan passion for the
game," said Katz.
Another point of
difference is the
League's player
eligibility requirement.
Developed by the
League's Board members,
who include Chairman and
former NCAA President
Cedric W. Dempsey,
former Florida player
and Florida and
Tennessee coach Doug
Dickey, former ACC
Commissioner and Notre
Dame Athletic Director
Gene Corrigan, former
UCLA Athletic Director
Peter Dalis, and former
U.S. Naval Academy
Athletic Director Jack
Lengyel, players
selected by the League
must have earned their
Bachelor's degree in
addition to exhausting
their college football
eligibility.
Additional try-outs will
be conducted next month
in Michigan and Texas.
